A History of Burlington House

A talk by Caroline Knight

Wednesday 18 April

Since 1867 Burlington House has been the home of the Royal Academy, although it is one of the few surviving great private houses in central London to survive. Begun in 1666, it was bought as an unfinished shell by Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Burlington, who also bought Chiswick House a few years later. His grandson, the 3rd Earl, made considerable alterations to it, and used it in conjunction with Chiswick when he was in London. This lecture will look at the history of the building, its owners and, briefly, its subsequent public use.
