Friends Summer Opera: Carmen
Thursday 4 July, 7.30pm
This year, Chiswick House Friends will present a two night open-air opera event, performed by Focus Opera. Performing for the first time in Chiswick House Gardens, this new professional touring company will have a larger stage, enhanced sound system and an exciting new production.
Picnic All Evening
The entire rear lawn of the House is reserved for ticket holders from 6.00pm. Set up your chairs and picnic and enjoy a magical evening celebrating summer with friends.
Bring your own picnic, or buy picnic food and hot beverages from The Company of Cooks' stall on the night, as well as champagne, wine and beer from the Fuller's stall.
Focus Opera are delighted to make their debut at Chiswick House Opera with an exciting powerful new production set just outside Seville in the Spain of the 1950's. A young international cast bring this searing drama with its exciting and beautiful melodies to life.
Set to one of the world's most brilliant colourful scores full of popular, well known tunes, Carmen is the story of a doomed fateful love affair between a young gypsy girl and naive police officer, Don José. 'Prettier than a gypsy with the eyes of a wolf', labelled as a thief and a liar, Carmen is a girl who rails against the conventions and morals of society with her own rules and a need to be a free spirit. She will change their lives for ever.
'I shall be delighted to.... try to change the genre of opera-comique............' wrote Bizet to the director of the Opéra Comique in 1869. And change it he did, with a tale of passion, red hot lust, jealousy and finally murder.
