Chiswick Camellias Win Gold!

The Chiswick House and Gardens Trust have won a coveted Gold Award with the Plant Heritage London Group.

The Plant Heritage team scooped the Gold Award for the category 'Seasonal plants from the National Plant Collections' at the Early Spring Royal Horticultural Society Fair which took place on 16th and 17th February in Vincent Square, London.

Plant Heritage is an organisation which works on the conservation of garden plants, and their winning stand was made up of material from such prestigious gardens as Buckingham  Palace, Myddelton House, The Royal Parks Isabella Plantation and Regents Park, and Chiswick House and Gardens Trust.

The stand displayed coloured stems, evergreens, and flowers and the Chiswick House Camellias added a wonderful splash of colour, displayed in water surrounded by moss to offset their pink and white petals.

A delighted Estates Manager Geraldine King said, 'This is the second year running that the Chiswick House Camellias have been part of a Gold Award-winning team. The feedback from the judges and visitors this year on the unusual varieties and display of our Camellias was very rewarding. And some of these visitors have already been inspired to travel from Vincent Square to Chiswick to see these heritage Camellias in the Conservatory where they have been growing for 200 years during our annual Camellia Show which ends on March 13th'.

Chiswick Gardens have a historic link with the Horticultural Society (the precursor of the RHS) as they had their display gardens on land leased from the Duke of Devonshire. The path which runs up through the centre of Chiswick House walled gardens continued on and into the Horticultural Society Gardens in the first half of the 19th century in what is now an area just to the north of the walled kitchen garden on the other side of what is today the A4.

This year there will be another chance to buy Chiswick House’s heritage varieties and some specially selected spring flowers.
